The Rev is a student-run literary journal, formerly known as The Russell Sage Review.
For the third year in a row, The Rev is being produced in conjunction with young people at CreativityUnleashed.
The Rev is published in partnership with the Russell Sage English, Writing and Culture program. EWC is an innovative program in which students engage with diverse literatures and cultures, learn about the ways that writing shapes the world, and develop their own powerful voices.

THE REV - A MAGAZINE PRODUCED BY CREATIVITYUNLEASHED
Welcome to our 2024 edition of The Rev literary and creative arts magazine, formerly known as the Russell Sage College Review. This year we received an unprecedented amount of creative submissions across the Russell Sage College Albany and Troy campuses, including current students (undergrad and graduate), alumnae, staff and faculty, alongside students from the UK, such as the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham. This is why you will find a mix of British and American English throughout this magazine.
Inside these pages you can enjoy a wide range of creativity including: poetry, flash fiction, memoir, opinion editorials, photography, painting, digital artwork, illustrations and more. New this year is even the publication of a film trailer!
Our selection process was driven by the mission to integrate as many diverse voices as possible, focusing on what our communities are celebrating, what they are mourning and what they are hoping for in the future.
This Year’s Partners:
Questar III’s New Visions: Visual & Performing Arts program, located at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, NY, is a specialized program for academically and artistically advanced high school seniors who are planning to attend college for the visual or performing arts. NV: VAPA students gain knowledge about the business of art and specific techniques through a curriculum that blends college-level education with practical experience. The students work both independently and collaboratively as they experience many different art forms. Topics of study include preparing the college application, audition and/or portfolio; filmmaking; songwriting and recording; playwriting and performance; and an art show.
Many thanks to local poet Hajar Hussaini for inspiring us this year with her poetry workshop. We also thank our very own Maverick Douglas for introducing us to the fun concept of fan fiction. We want to thank Mark Mathews and his team at Bluekite Creative in Cornwall, England for the design of our magazine. And finally, thank you to Brett Petersen for his invaluable support in providing final copying editing for the magazine.
Thank you to the Sage College librarians and staff for their support.
Stipends for workshops and talks and publication of the printed version of The REV were funded by Russell Sage College’s Carol Ann Donahue Endowed Fund. The magazine is also supported by the Russell Sage College English, Writing and Culture program.

THE REV - A MAGAZINE PRODUCED BY CREATIVITYUNLEASHED
What a year we’ve had over here at Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. While the world returned to a sort of normal post pandemic, our creatives have been very busy. After many weeks of creative arts workshops and reviewing an incredible collection of submissions from our community, we are very excited to present this year’s offering of creative content. Inside these pages you will find voices from our community here in upstate New York and also from our partners in London, UK. This includes our students, staff and faculty here at Sage but also the young people from CreativityUnleashed. This is why there is a mix of British and American English.
It has been our absolute pleasure working with the editorial team of The Rev at Russell Sage College for our second collaborative magazine.
Inside these pages you can enjoy a wide range of creativity including: poetry, flash fiction, non-fiction, photography, painting, digital artwork, drawings and more. The selection process was driven by the mission to integrate as many diverse voices as possible, focusing in on what our communities are celebrating, what they are mourning and what they are hoping for in the future.
Many thanks to local poet Carol Durant and local theatre director Jean-Remy Monnay for inspiring us this year with stories of their creative processes and advice regarding how to integrate a creative lifestyle in a post-pandemic world. Also, we’d like to thank Mark Mathews from Bluekite Creative for the design of our magazine and also for the work experience opportunities afforded to our design student.
Thank you to the Sage College librarians and staff for their support.

The Rev and Haringey Unchained with special guest Durham University -
A MAGAZINE BY CREATIVITYUNLEASHED
Over the 2021 academic year, while global efforts to combat Covid-19 increased, students from Haringey Sixth Form College (H6FC) in London, Durham University in England and Russell Sage College in Troy, New York met every two weeks virtually to explore their new normal through the creative arts.
CREATIVITYUNLEASHED organised a programme of workshops and talks from innovative professionals in the culture sector to inspire them to editorialise the work of their communities. All students and staff came together to create this year’s Haringey Unchained, a special edition with Russell Sage College’s literary arts magazine: The Rev. This is why you will see a synthesis of British and American English throughout this magazine. Our group also partnered with Durham University through Edith Sandulescu, current a CreativityUnleashed Editor.
Now in its seventh year and sixth volume, this edition of Haringey Unchained is a true testament to the spirit of our communities as we face a world without in-person arts – a world upturned by social and political change, a global pandemic and individual loss. Our editorial teams selected contributions from over 350 submissions. The final product here is what we believe reflects the key concerns and celebrations of these voices.
Inside, you can find the following:
- Poetry
- Fiction
- Nonfiction
- Photography
- Illustration/Drawing
- Painting
- Collage
- Digital Artwork
Stipends for workshops and talks and publication of the printed version of The REV/Haringey Unchained were funded by Russell Sage College’s Carol Ann Donahue Endowed Fund.
Stage and Stanza is a bimonthly theatre and poetry series sponsored by The Theatre Institute at Sage and Opalka Gallery, in partnership with local poet and playwright, Carol Durant. Durant conceived of Stage & Stanza to highlight local and national figures in the theatre and poetry fields whose work has meaningful connections to current events.
